Conservatorships

Conservatorships

A conservatorship is a where a court appoints a conservator to care for another adult, called the conservatee. A conservatee is a person who is unable to manage their own affairs due to physical or mental limitations.

Conservatorships can be established for either the person’s care and personal needs or the estate, including finances and property, or both.

Limited conservatorships exist for adults with developmental disabilities, focusing on the least restrictive options.

There are different types of conservatorships which can be stressful and confusing to navigate.

There are also alternatives to conservatorships, such as powers of attorney, details outlined within trusts, or advanced healthcare directives which can be explored before turning to the pursuit of a conservatorship.

If any of these options are something you are considering, speaking to a lawyer about the best steps to take is advisable.
